Red Merchandise Banned Ahead Of Valentines Day

BANGKOK – The Ministry of Culture has declared an official ban on the color red for Valentine’s Day celebrations, citing possible misunderstandings in the currently charged political climate and “unacceptable risk of sowing social discord,” according to a spokesperson.

“In Thai people’s expression of love for each other, we must not express a possible lack of reverence for our highest institutions,” explained Worawat Ua-apinyakul, the head of the ministry. “Besides, there are many other colors that look just as romantic, and are more appropriate for Thais.” The Ministry has suggested that Valentine’s Day merchandise be sold in yellow, or if yellow is not available, blue.

Businesspeople in the Valentine's Day industry were dismayed by the ban, claiming that short notice made it difficult to change their merchandising stocks for the popular holiday. However, at least one importer, requesting anonymity, said red hearts were still selling well through underground channels in the northern parts of Thailand. “You’d think it was Valentine’s Day every day in some parts of Isaan,” he said.
