BANGKOK – The Culture Ministry in partnership with the program formerly known as OTOP unveiled its innovative new line of clothing for the modern Thai woman last night at a spectacular catwalk show at Siam Paragon.
In an attempt to shed its old-fashioned image, the Ministry initiated the unique collaboration and enlisted the help of Thailand’s gayest designers.
Each designer was told to return to his home province, renounce his homosexuality at a local temple, and then find inspiration in the local materials for an article of clothing made up of “100 percent Thai products and 100 percent Thai values,” as the fashion line is titled.
The designers then returned to Bangkok and under the watchful eye of the Culture Ministry refined the design concept until it satisfied both the designer and Ministry officials. Finally, local artisans in the home provinces were taught how to manufacture the products, which will be sold both domestically and abroad as part of what was formerly called OTOP.
The unique creations launched last night include a six-piece bathing suit made of rubber from the plantations of Pattani, a veil using bird’s nests from Phang Nga Bay, and hard-wood teak panties with lock and key from Mae Hong Son.
The show-stealer, however, was the silk burka, designed by Khorat native Chit Purichai. The design combines elements of both the traditional Taliban and Pakastani burka with flashes of color and patterns associated with Thai silk shirts and sarongs.
“The clothes support traditional Thai values and artisans, are non-denominational and they are trendy too,” said project coordinator and culture ministry spokeswoman Ying Pornluck, wearing the line’s signature item. “I’d like to see Elle Fashion Week top this?”
“The Culture Ministry was a joy to work with,” said designer Oat Kalosin, who created the hard-wood panties, which he calls the “Lock Box.” “They were always giving me their input, feedback and ultimatums. At first I rejected the concept, but then they encouraged me to remember my contractual obligations and the sex tape they had of me giving head to a high-profile politician.”
All of the products will be on sale at OTOP shops around the country starting tomorrow.
