SAN DIEGO — In another landmark moment for the gay rights movement, Timothy and Brian Conway of San Diego, California became the first gay couple to file for divorce and enter into a legal dispute over the distribution of property and assets.

Gay activists called the divorce “a triumph” for the gay rights movement, and “another step in our quest to participate in all of America’s time-honored traditions.”
“For so many decades, we have been wrongly told that a divorce is something that could only occur between a man and a woman,” said Andrew Birkman, spokesman of Gay! “Now homosexuals too, like millions of heterosexual couples before them, can break off their long-term relationships and launch bitter litigation over their assets. It’s massive progress.”
Birkman said the next breakthrough in the gay marriage battle would be for gays and lesbians to launch destructive custody battles over their adopted children.
