Hun Sen, Cambodia’s former prime minister and current senate president, escalated tensions with Thailand by accusing Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra of treason for insulting Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang during a private phone call, quoting her as saying he “was an opponent of Thailand and would say anything to make himself look cool,” and warning her not to try fooling him or using political tricks to gain an advantage.

“You know, this shameless attempt at getting me to despise our prime minister is vindictive and probably has ulterior motives that don’t further my personal interests. On the other hand, I always did think she looked a little shifty, so I guess I want her to resign immediately.”

“Paetongtarn called Boonsin an ‘opponent of Thailand’—which, in fairness, has never disqualified anyone from becoming PM. ‘Boonsin for PM’, I guess?”

“Whoa! A treason-off? Time for Paetongtarn to clap back. Next time she’s at a microphone, she should remind the Cambodian people how Hun Sen fled the Khmer Rouge for Vietnam in 1977 when things got a little too hot for him, and only came back home riding at the head of a foreign army.”
