BANGKOK- In a surprise announcement, the drafters of the new government charter have declared Isuzu Motors to be the official state pickup truck of the Kingdom of Thailand. According to CDA (Constitution Drafting Assembly of Thailand) president Noranit Setthabutr, Article 17 of the draft now states that the “official truck for light hauling, small-business cargo transport, and dependable, off-road family fun is Isuzu.” The agreement is part of a 5-year sponsorship deal between the government and Isuzu Motors, Thailand, the country’s leading brand in vehicle sales. In exchange for official status and tax breaks “to be finalized later,” the government will receive 500 new 1-ton D-MAX trucks in a limited-edition “Royal Yellow” finish. According to Isuzu Thailand president Masimi Awata, the sponsorship deal includes an option to renew in 2012, if the constitution hasn’t been overturned by a subsequent coup.
