BANGKOK — GMMTV is launching a 2026 reboot of Abhisit, the primetime lakorn that ended its original run in spectacular fashion more than a decade ago. First launched in 2008, the series earned decent ratings for its writing and pacing, before producers demanded an over-the-top finale so gratuitously violent it triggered protests outside the film studio and a swift cancellation, clearing the slot for rival Shinawatra Studios’ spinoff Yingluck (which was also cancelled mid-arc by government censors for featuring a bizarre subplot overly focused on rice). Surprising everyone for developing a small, but cult audience on streaming, Abhisit has quietly become a favorite, leading execs to dust off the property rather than risk a new concept. “For reasons we can’t explain, audiences continue to react negatively to new shows with fresh talent, and modern plots. Viewer surveys repeatedly tell us they want familiar faces whose actions they can reliably predict and then yell at in real-time, expressing their love-hate relationship with the characters on social media,” said Somrak Vivattanaphisut, CEO of GMMTV. Casting remains in flux, with Chalermchai Sri-on, Dech-it Khaothong, and Chaichana Dechdecho all still negotiating whether they’ll return as series villains or make the pivot to surprise allies. At press time, anonymous sources reported Yingluck had also contacted her agent, wondering if there was space for her too to return from TV exile.
