NAYPYIDAW – The Burmese junta on Monday arrested dozens of leaders from the ’88 generation who distributed a VCD with a message from detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The generals said that it was illegal to mention “The Lady”, and anyone who much as showed her picture was liable for arrest.
“We simply cannot have people referring to this particular human being,” a spokesman for the State Peace and Development Council told the state-run New Light of Myanmar.
Human rights activists around the globe condemned the latest move and called on the generals to allow for basic freedoms and a fresh election.
However, neighboring country Thailand supported the move to crack down on VCDs that feature messages from elected leaders.
“Elected leaders appearing on VCDs could disrupt the unity that the Burmese people cherish,” the Thai Foreign Ministry said in a message.
