BANGKOK – Crowds were gathering late last night at what many believed to be the last remaining quiet spot in the entire Bangkok metropolitan area.
The spot was discovered after one passerby was transfixed by what he could only describe as an “eerie absence”, but later realized was best defined by the phenomenon his grandfather had called “silence”.
Around 200 people had trekked to the vacant lot in Baan Plad. In absolute silence, they stood still, many experiencing for the first time life without the sound of traffic, construction work, mall music or the steady drone of air-conditioning units. Several people were reportedly frightened by the experience.
The owner of the lot said the publicity had created renewed interest among developers and he was already fielding an offer for a 32-floor condominium to be built on the site.
